Word on the Street

From Karen Warin

fam·i·ly: a group of people who share common attitudes, interests, or goals and, frequently, live together

Looking around the crowded living room at the 25-30 Nav staff and stakeholders eating, laughing and talking animatedly about their ministries recently, it would be hard not to think of this tight knit group of people as family. And what a unique, diverse family it is! We are a melting pot of Hispanic, Anglo, Protestant, Catholic and Native American cultures. We are also a family of multiple generations, ranging from five staff in their twenties to staff and stakeholders who’ve been with the Navigators for over twenty years. Our differences only serve to unite us as we come together to fellowship, learn from each other, support one another and grow.

A new school year at the University of New Mexico has brought us three new Edge Corp staff to join Phil and Lillian Ward and Clint and Leigh Ann Trebesh in reaching out to the students on campus. Ross Kirk, Kim Sutherland and Allison Roen have gotten off to a running start as the team has contacted students, hosted special events and started small groups all over campus. They kicked off the year with a week’s worth of daily prayer walks around the campus, joined by many of our local staff. In addition, the whole Metro team is working to recruit two busloads of college students to attend the Fall Conference at Estes Park. We’re expecting great things from God this year!

Our Urban, Hispanic, Catholic and Business and Professional ministries continue to grow through our strategic outreach programs; Juntos for inner city kids, Christian education programs, as well as, marriage and family ministry in the Catholic church, and four monthly Faith@Work luncheons for business people. Each of these ministries benefits from the support and involvement of the Collegiate team, as well. They reach out to our college-age staff kids, they serve at Juntos, they attend monthly luncheons and pray with us and for us as we seek to reach the whole city! We have learned that the best ministry happens when our whole family works together as one.
